Discover Iraq

Iraq is one of the world’s most historically significant yet least understood countries. As the cradle of ancient civilizations, it offers an extraordinary blend of history, culture, resilience, and hospitality that few international visitors ever have the opportunity to experience firsthand.

During their stay, interns are encouraged to discover Iraq beyond the workplace and beyond common narratives. From ancient Mesopotamian cities and UNESCO World Heritage Sites to vibrant local markets, riverside cafés, mountains, marshlands, and desert landscapes, the country offers a depth and diversity that continues to surprise even long-term residents. Weekends and free time can be spent exploring iconic sites such as Babylon, Samarra, Erbil Citadel, or lesser-known natural and cultural locations that remain largely untouched by mass tourism.

Choosing Iraq means engaging with a country beyond headlines and stereotypes. Living and working alongside local teams allows interns to understand everyday life, build meaningful relationships, and gain insight into a society shaped by both history and renewal. For those interested in humanitarian action, development, education, media, research, or community-based work, Iraq provides a unique learning environment that combines professional growth with personal perspective.

Optional cultural visits and weekend trips are coordinated through Seventh Sense for Media and Art Production Ltd., an affiliate of Mercy Hands. These experiences are designed specifically for interns and include discounted rates, trusted local guides, and flexible itineraries tailored to interests such as history, nature, art, and daily life. All activities are organized with a strong focus on safety, cultural sensitivity, and responsible engagement.

Exploring Iraq is not simply about visiting places — it is about understanding context, connecting with people, and experiencing a country in transition. Many interns describe these moments as a defining part of their time in Iraq, offering clarity, humility, and memories that last well beyond the internship itself.

Watch the videos below to hear directly from former interns as they share their experiences exploring Iraq and reflect on how these journeys enriched their stay.
